December 2007 has seen the launch of a new Belgium brand that would shake up the world of the watchmaking industry: Ice Watch.

Created by Jean-Pierre Lutgen, the brand is today a worldwide phenomenon.  As the creator says: “Sometimes we have the feeling that none of this is real! It went so fast!” Indeed, Ice watch was a success story from the very beginning.

How it all started

Jean-Pierre Lutgen was a former promotional items reseller from Belgium that would sell lapel pin, cap, and watches… Part of his job was to go to Asia to visit suppliers and find new items he could sell to his European clients.

One day in 2007, while visiting one of them, his attention got caught by a colourful watch and Jean-Pierre had the feeling he could start something with it.

In the meantime, his company Tonton et Lulu was not doing really well and he decided to sell it the same year for a minimal price of 50 000 euros.
But thanks to his contacts and his experience in China, as well as his creativity, Jean-Pierre Lutgen could launch Ice Watch in December the same year.

Who are they?

Colourful watches, large choice of collections and an affordable price: this seems to be the successful recipe!
Jean-Pierre Lutgen explains: “The watch is made for the change. Change is very trendy these days.”
With its headquarters located in Bastogne (Belgium), Ice Watch is still today a small company in terms of employees (around 15 people are working for the brand) if we compare it to the giants of the industry (Swatch group, Rolex etc.)

The strategy, design, marketing and communication are created from Belgium, while the production of the watches is in China (Shenzhen).

Small…but Powerful!

The idea of the Ice Watch is to be accessible and affordable to anyone (and still be desirable): Accessible to all generations, in Europe, Africa or Asia… with a price range from 59 to around 200 euros.

Today Ice Watch is sold in over 100 countries around the world and is present on all continents.

CHANGE. YOU CAN.

NICOLAS HAYEK, A SWISS ICON (1928-2010)

"This man makes use of all his energy and passion to succeed on its projects. He has lots of talents.” This is how Cindy Crawford, the world famous top-model spoke about Nicolas Hayek. Died in 2010, Nicolas Hayek is still a legend in Switzerland. He is considered as the man who saved the Swiss horology in the decade 1980.

                                                   Who was really Nicolas Hayek?

Nicolas Hayek, originally from Lebanon, has begun its career as consultant for the automobile and steel industry. But, he had a DNA of an entrepreneur, a man who built new products, who "brings something to the planet" as he said. This is why he created his own company of consulting Hayek Engineering. Often he liked to repeat“at the beginning it was very hard, I didn't have customers. I worked in a small office, where I wasn't able to pay me a telephone line, I had to go to a phone box, in front of my office”.

But in 1982, twenty years later, Hayek Engineering is become a well-known company in Zurich, and its customers was very famous as BMW, Philips, Gaumont, Nestlé, Renault…

                                                     Impetuous Nicolas.

Iconoclast, Nicolas Hayek began famous because of its strong personality. He didn’t hesitate to speak directly with any employees, customers or competitors. Invited in 2009, in Le Forum des 100, a meeting of the main personalities in French-speaking Switzerland, he said to the crowd before the first question of the interviewer: “First of all, do you really want to speak with me?”

Impetuous, Nicolas Hayek sometimes was described as crazy or egocentric. He related the moment at the beginning of Swatch when he presented some watches to elegant ladies in a tennis club, next to his home. Convinced that it will be a success, it was a complete disappointment. They said to him “You really think, you will save the Swiss horology with these plastic watches, you’re crazy!”

But Nicolas Hayek was a man with a strong willpower. Very motivating for its colleagues, he worked with passion and optimism,“I don’t work, I have fun between 12 and 14 hours per day.”

                                                       A talented businessman.

Focus on the product: this is on secret of the businessman. In fact, while lots of companies lost their time with schedules and organisational problems, Hayek wanted to focus his energy on making a good product. This is why, in spite of a cheap price, the Swatch is a good qualitative watch, and this part of the success.

Secondly, he understood the importance of marketing and branding. He succeeded to re-position lots of brands as Oméga, Bréguet, or Tissot. He employed stars as Cindy Crawford or George Clooney to advertise on his brands.

                                                    A humanist entrepreneur?

It is a difficult question but what it can be said is: Nicolas Hayek has injected a family spirit in the Swatch Group until the end of his life. His employees loved him. Of course, he fired people during his career but "only when I didn't have other solutions".

Some people relate that he didn’t speak about his fabrics in China. This is true, but he created so many jobs that it will be petty to accuse him on this topic.

                                                  Nicolas Hayek is still living.

Due to his son, who is C.E.O of the Swatch Group and his daughter, also working for the company, the spirit of Nicolas Hayek is still existing. This entrepreneurial spirit can be sum up in few words: create good and desirable products with passion and respect.

The story of Swatch, that is to say Swiss-Watch, is an incredible story. At the beginning of the year 1982-1983, the Swiss horology is in trouble. Because of the Japanese concurrency, lots of jobs are cut, just one man is optimistic, Nicolas Hayek.

A brand born into a crisis

In 1982, the Swiss watchmaking is in a deep crisis. The main problem can be sum up as a lack of rationalization of the production’s system. The industry is bipolarized with in one hand, the watches with high prices whose production is not efficient and the production of watches low segment, named also as watches Roskopf, but not competitive compared with Japanese or American (Timex) watches.

The two majors companies, the ASUAG (Allgemeine Schweizerische Uhreindustrie AG) and the SSIH (Société Suisse pour l’industrie horlogère) mainly suffer from this competition with Japanese brands, which produce good watches at a better price.

The decision is taken to merge the 2 companies to try to save them. At this period, Nicolas Hayek is working for the new structure as a consultant.

In this difficult context, the engineers of the Groupe ASUAG-SSIH are working on a cheap watch but of good quality, to compete with the Japanese on the low price segment. In 1982, the Swatch is created.
In the meantime, Hayek becomes owner of the company.

A simple idea but very efficient

The Swatch is the result of a competition between Swiss and Japanese watchmakers about the production of the watch the most flattest in the world. In 1982, a watch called “Delirium Tremens” was created, 1,98 milometers of thickness. Few months after, this technology was adapted to create a plastic quartz watch. It was the beginning of the Swatch.

To launch a product, not an easy thing

At the beginning, nobody wanted to sell the Swatch. Why?
Because it was a new unknown brand, and the margin for the retailers was very short.

But Nicolas Hayek understood the importance of branding and advertising very quickly. So he decided for example to hang a giant Swatch of 140 meters on a building in Frankfort. As said Nicolas Hayek “3 weeks later, each German baby knew what a Swatch was.”

An impressive marketing event : a giant watch on the Commerzbank, Frankfort, 1984.

Finally an enormous success

The brand Swatch is composed of 3 pillars, decided by Nicolas Hayek: an excellent quality, an attractive price, and something provocative.

Since 1983, the success of the Swatch is still important. Today it represent 296 millions of  Swiss francs of exportations from Switzerland to the world per year.

In spite of his financial impact on the Swatch Group, which permitted to re-position the others brands of the company to luxury. The main impact of the Swatch was a marketing one, because, for the first time in the watchmaking industry a brand was developed as a global brand, that is to say, the same products were sold everywhere, which was not the case before (watches were adapted to the market, USA, Japan, Europe…)

Furthermore, a real storytelling was made and big events put in place, as the rent of Zermatt for a week-end, a village without cars to celebrate the 100 millionth Swatch sold.

Obviously since 1983, a large range of Swatch was designed. Some metallic Swatch were created in a range called Irony (1994). But the most important thing was the decision to open flagship stores, directly inspired from the fashion industry.

The aim was not to compete with the retailers but on the contrary it was proved that areas where flagship stores were opened next to retailers increased the sells of the last one.

Swatch, a standard bearer for the Swatch Group

In 2013, the brand Swatch is the standard bearer of the Swatch Group. Although the brand targets the low segment market of the watchmaking industry, the marketing significance of the brand is still important for the entire company.
